My son is 18 and I have a small business as a Sole Proprietor in CA, do I need workers comp if I hire him?

Generally, if you have even only one employee, you must carry insurance. If you do not carry insurance, you can be subject to penalties, and an injured employee, including your son, could sue you civilly. In that situation, you would not be protected by the reduced damages afforded by the worker's compensation system.
