If i bought a gift for my gf and we decided to break up, do i have legal obligation to get my gift back

If you made a gift, you have surrendered any ownership interest in it. With that said, if it were an engagement ring given in contemplation of marriage and she broke off the engagement, you're entitled to have the ring returned.
