Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

defamation of charachter

I'm getting sued from an ex boyfriend for defamation of character. I'm in Vancouver Canada, he lives in Newport Beach, California. How does this work? Please advise at your earliest convenience. Would I need to hire a canadian attorney or an attorney from California? This is baffling and quite ridiculous.

Thank you for your prompt reply.

You hire an attorney where the court is. If the case is the California court here in SoCal, feel free to contact me.

Re: defamation of charachter

The papers you received should indicate the name of the court where the lawsuit is pending.

The rules and treaties for international service of process are complicated; and it is possible that your ex did not strictly comply with all of the legal requirements, and he therefore did not properly serve you.

There may be other defenses that would make the case go away quickly.

Unfortunately, even groundless cases need to be defended. Please consult an attorney in Southern California if the case is pending there.
