Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Fiance cosigned for ex girlfriend on her credit card. She owes $7k and now told him that she is letting it go into default. Is there anything he can do to not be liable. I'm afraid they can go after him for this amount and possibly put a judgement on his credit report.

He IS liable, period. He will have to either pay the debt or defend a lawsuit and counter-sue her.
