Inmate assaulted and wounded in State Prison California US

A friend of mine, was assaulted in prison. Based in the Federal Civil Law suit 42.USC.§1983 he need urgently an attorney. But, due his personal finantial condition, could be a free attorney help, based in 42.USC.§1988

If he was assaulted by an inmate, what does he think a lawsuit is going to achieve with a 'no asset' prisoner/defendant? He's sure not likely to get a 'free attorney' since there would be NO potential money recovery.

If he was assaulted by a guard, what does he think the likelihood is of proving it? ... or of even overcoming the claims of self defense, attack on a guard, etc.? Winning lawsuits requires evidence other than his version of events. IF he has credible witnesses and proof, then he could look for a 'public interest' law firm in the area that is willing to make such prisoner rights claims.
