Legal interview questions

Hi: is it legal to ask a job applicant if they are a US citizen? I teach an HR course and there seems to be a discrepancy between what the text says and some articles online. Thank You.

Of course. Employers are obligated to verify citizenship or legal immigrant work status. How would you propose they do that without asking? It's illegal to hire anyone without such proof.
