what is the best way to collect a debt that was paid with a check that has no funds? its been three weeks and we can no longer get ahold of this person. we have the check for 5000 dollars, what should we do?

Take it to your local police for prosecution or collection; that may work. You can also sue in small claims court and seek a judgment you could record and try to collect on.
