Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California
Neighbors to sue us
Our neighbors are sueing us because of our son, who does have a drug problem. They didn't like his coming and going in the neighborhood and the people he asociates with at our house(mostly when we werent there). They have called the police numerous times apparently to complain about him, but he was never arrested for anything. Anyway, the police told us if we didnt put a restraining order to keep him away, the neighbors could sue us for $5000 each, so we did. We told him he had to move out or we could help him get into a rehab(which he declined). Well, one day he got in the house when we weren't home and a neighbor saw him and called the police. He was arrested for tresspassing, but now the police have informed us that the whole neighborhood is going ahead with sueing us because we were harboring him and allowing him to come in the house,(they think we purposly left the door unlocked) .We thought the house was locked, and told him not to come to the house, but he didnt listen. But they are sueing us regardless, because we apparently didn't do enough to keep him away and they feel the neighbor hood is not safe with him around. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Advice: either negotiate and resolve the litigation yourselves, or hire an attorney. You risk losing substantial money if they win.
