Legal Question in Civil Rights Law in California

Payroll

I work at a furniture store. The owner had me sign a form that said that if I broke anything I had to pay for it. The other day I was going to deliver something when I accidentally broke that back window. He is now charging me for it. Can he automatically take it out of my payroll check without my authorization?

Re: Payroll

Not unless the document you signed states that he can do so. Nothing can come out of your paycheck except taxes, benefits, and anything else you authorize or that the law permits. However, if you don't pay, there could be a lot of bad feelings, so you might want to negotiate payment if you're responsible for the damage.

Re: Payroll

No. Employees are generally not liable for breakage unless through criminal conduct or misconduct. Your 'agreement' might modify that, so look to see what it says.
