Legal Question in Construction Law in California

Contractors in my Home

I hired a licensed general contractor to do certain work in my home. He hired a subcontractor to do much of the work. The general and the subcon did not get along. The subcon guy was fired halfway through the job. He believes (and I suspect he is right) that the general contractor cheated him badly when it came to paying for his work here. I know the subcontractor is hiring an attorney. Should I worry that this bad business might create liability for me?

You should worry because you could be exposed to paying twice. You should consult an attorney (or educate yourself) as to the use of lien releases and/or joint/checks.

If the sub isn't paid, he can lien your property. Make the contractor get a lien release from the sub.
