Unlicensed (now unethical) contractor

DRAMA! So, I hire the supposed contractor to do two jobs. One being a closet and the other being a bathroom. All in, about 20K for both in labor. He was referred by his spouse (formerly my friend) and also my co-worker, so I thought I'd save all the headaches with having a personal connection with this contractor, Wrong! He kept saying he left things out (like a door) on the original agreement and demanded I pay him for the extra labor not included on his original estimate, I said no! So far it has been an ugly departure. His wife is now making anonymous phone calls to Human resources to my companies ethics hotline with of course fabricated allegations. the contractor has annonymously called the city about permits not being pulled (which I did ask him about). The city came knocking and wants it of course, corrected. The plumbing is buried in tile and some electrical also. Once I get these items fixed and inspected, what is my recourse with this jerk? I've filed a restraining order because he's irate, so I--name removed--hoping it gets granted. I just cannot believe this guy. I've warned him about filing with CSLB and IRS (for cash payments) He just does not want to go away quietly.

It is unclear what your question is.

But if the person is in fact unlicensed (or not licensed to do the work that he did), then you are entitled to a refund of all the money that you paid him for the work that required a licensed. This is the law, and the statute is quite strict.

If you need help, let us know. We sue contractors (licensed and unlicensed) all the time.
