Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
contractor fraud
I hired a contractor to remodel my 1200 sq feet condo. I paid him over $30,000 and it has been in the works since July 2005. I still do not have a functional kitchen (no sink or counter and some cabinets missing). The quality of the work is less than satisfactory, but now I am only interested in having the kitchen finished. The man has appeared and disappeared, and at the moment he cannot be located. He is not licensed (said he was, but lied) hired illegal workers, and i am sure never reported the income i provided (have cashed cks copies) He also involved his father by having me cut a $5000 ck out to his fictitious company. I realize I have been stupid to pay too much upfront... it is a long story. I am not sure as to what to do. I have his name, and address where he lives, the license plate of his truck, and his father address and phone number. No ss number or license (he refused to give it to me). I have collected paper work to report him to various agencies, however that would not give me what i need... my kitchen. I have even offered to go get the materials and have the work done by someone else. He refused. Please give me an idea as to what i should do. thank you so much
