Legal Question in Consumer Law in California
Self-storage question
After fulfilling all requirements the self-storage company gave me regarding accessing my deceased relatives storage unit (and they acknowledged it was fulfilled), I rented a van and drove from SFO to LA to clear out the unit. The attendant said he wasn't aware of it, too bad, go home. I can't go again until April. I'm out the rental, a hotel room, etc, plus I'll have to pay another month's rent on the unit. Do I have any legal recourse in this issue?
Thank you

Re: Self-storage question
It's called detrimental reliance. You might think twice about doing anything about it right now, since others can become vindictive, property can disappear, etc. You might be able to try a small claims action after you retrieve the property. My suggestion is to keep up the storage payments until you're ready to get the property, obtain a date in writing from the storage place, fly down to LA that morning, rent a truck or van one-way, and save on the hotel. Good luck.
