Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

I'm in California and my HOA is suing me for $8,000 for an unpaid principal balance of only $1,800.00. The difference is their collection costs and attorney fees. These fees seem excessive. Do I have any consumer protection?

No but the judge has discretion to award whatever the party suing you is entitled to receive and adjust the figures if excessive (not reasonable). You wil have to answer the complaint and the matter will be resolved at the trial.
