Cancellation of wedding

Had to cancel my wedding due to fiance father being hospitalized, now country club sent amount to collections and want to take legal actions. There was a contract but we truely thought he was going to die. Please help me

Nothwithstanding the underlying contract, there might be possible causes of action against the collection agency depending on the conduct.
