Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in California

Statue of Limitations on a past debt from 6 years ago

I was recently sent a letter from the Sacramento County collection agency trying to collect on a past due utility bill that they say occured from May-November of 1998. My questions is can the collection agency legally sue me or bring any judgement against me if this debt now over 5/12-6 years old and this is the first time within the 6 years that I have been contacted or even knew of this alleged debt that they say I owe? And the second part of my question is can the collection agency then put this on my credit report?

Statute of limitations for a lawsuit is 4 years.

It can go and stay on your credit report for 7 years.

You may have a lawsuit against the collection agency. Normally, there is a 4 year statute. We will need to review the bill. If you fax your phone number and copies of the collection letters to 714 363 0229, I can call you and let you know if you have a case.
