Can a 18 yr old date a 17 old in California without getting in trouble for it?

Date? Yes.
Sex? No. And no other sexual contact either.
And don't do anything that would be seen as "contributing to the delinquency of a minor" under Penal Code section 272. Don't keep them out past curfew and/or their parent's deadlines. Don't take them to over 18 places....

I agree with Mr. Dane. Sexual contact (which includes more than just intercourse) between an 18-year-old and a 17-year-old is a crime, but non-sexual dating is legal. And heed his words about respecting the parents' deadlines. They can make a lot of trouble for you if you don't.
