I posted bail for a friend, and found out later that the case for which i posted bail had been dismissed

Go to the clerk's office with your receipt. This assumes you paid cash bail to the court. If you paid a bail bondsman 10% of the bail amount for a bail bond, it's gone, hit up your friend.

OK, your're out your bail money if you used a bail bondsman, but no longer at risk for the full amount. If you paid cash to the court, go get it back.
