Isn't blackmail illegal?

Through a series of regrettable decisions, I've found myself threatened with blackmail by a man who already stole $6000 in cash and services from me. A month ago, I had to report an SUV as stolen that I had rented for him as a favor and he has yet to return. I've begged, asked, and tried EVERYTHING I can think of to have him return the vehicle and my money. during the course of our ''relationship'' I shared ''inside'' corporate info I shouldn't have, he is now blackmailing me that he will contact the SEC and my employer. When I reported the truck stolen ,the police said technically he didn't do anything illegal in scamming me out of money (I gave authorization on my credit card), though he COULD be charged with possession of stolen vehicle (though I had him as a driver on the rental. As you can imagine, I have NO idea what to do...isn't blackmail illegal?

The first thing you should do is contact an attorney who can advise and if necessary represent you in regard to the alleged SEC violations. Then either you or you and that attorney should contact the police and make a full report.

Yes, blackmail is illegal; you have to file a police report and disclose all the circumstances.
