Tell the truth and you face potential charges of filing false police report, but his charges MIGHT get dropped. Continue with the lie and he probably gets convicted and goes to jail/prison, with enhanced penalties because of the prior[s]. Your choice. No ethical attorney is going to tell you to lie, or teach you how to. Even if you tell the truth to the DA and judge, they probably won't believe you, or drop the charges. There are always consequences to our actions, whether intended or not.
2nd part of answer: I should have offered you the advice to hire an attorney for him, but I assumed he was probably getting the Public Defender. If not, and if he is serious about hiring counsel to help him, along with your assistance, then feel free to contact me.
