Initially, you plead guilty, but upon completing the program the conviction is dismissed and you take care of the offense without having to complete any jail time beyond what you may have already served at the time of sentencing. More importantly, you take part in a much needed rehabilitation program.

You do not go to jail and your case is entirely dismissed at the end of the program. Not simply expunged, but dismissed. While the program might be a bit difficult to complete, the immense advantages from the point of view of not having a criminal record are indisputable.
