How much time does a police agency have to file charges with the district attrney from the intitial date of the crime?

The police don't have to file charges with the D.A., so there is no time limit. The D.A. must file an information or complaint with the court before the statute of limitations has run. Different crimes have different limitation periods. Further, when the clock begins to tick can be hard to determine.
