Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Change lawyer?
I hired an attorney who I cant afford after all. We've been through arraignment, and the pre-trial conference (possible plea agreement) is scheduled for early next month. Can I change my attorney now? He isnt local and it costs TOOOO much for him to keep traveling here for court dates, etc. Help??

Thank you for your question, and for the opportunity to both help and advise you further.
You can change lawyers. You should advise your attorney that you need to first, and if you hire a new attorney, typically, that new attorney will take care of substituting the old attorney out and becoming the new attorney. If you'd rather request a public defender, then you'll probably need to appear at the next court date, and ask the court to appoint a public defender, and relieve your old attorney as the attorney of record.
I hope this helps, but if you have additional information, have other questions, or would like legal representation, please feel free to email me directly at [email protected]. It's my pleasure to help you in any way that I can, and thanks again.

Sure, you can change attorneys any time. Once you find one you can afford, he will take care of the Substitution of Attorney issues with the court and the other attorney. Feel free to contact me if interested, and the case is in SoCal.
