Child Rape
What usually happens to a 37 year old man found guilty of raping or molesting a 12 year old boy, in California

He gets a lengthy prison sentence; just how lengthy it is will depend upon the details of the offense and the defendant's criminal history.
When his fellow inmates find out why he's there, they make life much worse for him. Ideally the guards would prevent this, but California prisons are far from ideal.

A long prison sentence, registered sex offender status if he ever gets out, and risk of murder in prison by other inmates.
On the civil side, a lawsuit against him for damages. If he has anything worth collecting on, attorneys would be interested.
