Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

no contest plea

I was arrested for shoplifting clothes over $500.00. I pleaded no contest, recieved time served and 20 days community service. The store sent me a letter threatening to sue me if do not pay them. Can they legally do this?

Re: no contest plea

Of course it can. Your no-contest plea may make it harder for the store to prove you stole from it, but there is no reason the plea should prevent the store from suing you.
