Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

When going to court on an assigned day and time, without representation, for a misdemeanor,( not intentionally) selling alcohol to a minor from a grocery store, what should I say when called upon? Will the DA help me? I cannot afford to hire a lawyer.

If you cannot afford an attorney, you should ask the court to appoint the public defender to represent you.

The DA is not there to help you, nor is the judge. They are there to convict and jail you. The first and only thing you do is request a Public Defender, and follow his advice.

The DA is not going to help you. He is your adversary. And unlike you, he knows what he is doing. Get a lawyer in order to level the playing field. As Mr. Roach and Mr. Nelson have noted, the court will appoint a lawyer for you if you cannot afford one. The longer you continue without a lawyer, the worse your position is likely to become.

Good luck.
