Trying to help my dad out with this question?
my dad was a security for 18 years, he carried a fire arm till he quit in 96, he later wanted to go back but they said he couldnt carry a firearm because he had a conviction in 1988, what can i do to help him out with this?

Depending on the conviction he can get the conviction removed pursuant to Penal Code section 1203.4 and then petition for a certificate of rehabilitation and pardon from the governor. Simply getting the conviction removed won't allow him to carry a gun again. If his conviction wasn't a felony, for example if it was a domestic violence offense, then the gun prohibition was possibly only 10 years. Hire him an attorney to try to expunge the conviction, and seek a rehabilitation order, if he qualifies for such relief. Feel free to contact me if serious about doing this.
