is it legal to defend a member of one's family in a murder trial?

Only if the person defending the family member is a licensed attorney. One may defend one's self, but not have a non-attorney family member defend them.

If you are a qualified attorney, sure. Otherwise, no way. You wouldn't know what to do, anyway. You had to ask a very basic question, so do you really think you could 'play attorney' opposing a professional prosecutor intent on putting him in jail or the chair? Hire private counsel or ask for the PD if you don't have the substantial costs of private defense. If you do, feel free to contact me.

Only if you're a lawyer. Lawyers are the only people who can represent others in court. Well-intentioned laypeople cannot, regardless of their relationship to the party they want to represent.
