Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Drunk in public + Possession of Controlled Substance

I was at my friends house drinking and stepped outside for a while and patrolling cops arrested me for Drunk in Public.

When they searched me in jail, they found 3 ecstasy pills on me. I was put in jail for 3 days and now I have a court day in 2 months, being charged with Drunk in Public and Possession of Controlled substance.

I've never been in any kind of trouble with the law. Any advice on what to do? And what kind of consequences am I looking at? Thanks for you help.

Basic advise is this - bail out and get a good lawyer. If you have never been in trouble with the law, it seems the worst that can happen to you is DEJ or Prop. 36 - drug treatment/counseling in exchange for dismissal. Perhaps your case can be beaten altogether.

I always tell people they should fight like hell when they get their first criminal charge, because it is the most important. Recommend you hire a criminal defense lawyer well in advance of your first court date.
