is it possible to eliminate the requirement to register as an offender and if so how?

No. If the court imposed it in sentencing, then that's your permanent status. However, after a number of years [maybe three to five minimum] without further arrest or problems, and with virtuous behavior and life changes, you could file a motion seeking change, but you'll need really compelling good cause to convince the judge why he should do so. Everybody on the registered status ''wants off, duh, but the law, expressing public policy, put you there because of your conviction.
