Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

emblezzement

I was a buyer at a company but was let go last month. Due to current economy, I went into a local store and bought about $600 worth of tools. I sold these tools to someone.

It is now a little bit over a month and I received a phone call from my employer...left a message saying to call back..

Should I?

What should I do?

What are my consequences?

Re: emblezzement

If you're saying you used company money to buy them, you'll have to quickly repay the money and get the company not to press criminal charges. If and when charges are filed, you'll need to hire an attorney asap. Feel free to contact me if you need legal help and you're in SoCAL.

Re: embezzlement

"Because of the economy," you decided it was OK to start stealing? That kind of excuse only works if you are a big-time Wall Street embezzler. Best to have a lawyer make contact with your former employer and attempt to smooth things over before it goes any farther.

Re: emblezzement

I agree with Michael Stone. You should not contact the employer directly. Instead, you should have a lawyer you hire to contact him. If you admit to wrongfully taking the tools, you could be criminally prosecuted. If you have the money to pay the $600 back, you should do so immediately. Otherwise, have a lawyer work out a repayment plan.
