Continuances, for whatever reason, are at the discretion of the Court. Practices vary from one jurisdiction to the next so your question is difficult to answer with any precision. Obviously, the best answer is to have counsel before your next appearance. The alternative, if your unable to afford counsel is the Court will appoint counsel for you.

Continuances are in the discretion of the court. Generally a court will allow a reasonable amount of time to find counsel. However, at some point, the judge will want to move forward in light of the "people" needing a resolution to your charges.
Give my office a call if you need any help with these issues. I would need more information, but might be able to help you with your defense with the right set of facts and reasonable attorney's fees.

Thank you for your posting, and the opportunity to serve you further. Most judges would prefer that you retain an attorney, but may appoint a public defender until you get one, just to protect your rights.
Every judge is different, and you didn't mention which judge or county, or even courthouse your case is pending in, but as a general rule, most judges will give you at least 2-4 weeks to get an attorney retained and appear in court with you.
I hope this answer helps, but if you have additional questions, or want more information, please feel free to email me anytime at [email protected]. It's my pleasure to help in any way that I can.
