false accusations
I was wondering what the punishment is for accusing someone of a crime when you know they are innocent.

How about felony filing false police report, plus liability in a civil lawsuit. If you did it you could face jail time. If you were falsely accused, you should demand the DA file charges, and you may consider suing, if the person has assets, otherwise you are just spending/wasting good money.
