If there are proper grounds for appeal or motion for new trial, supported by credible evidence and legal arguments, and you are still timely, then go get them filed. The only advice anyone is going to be able to give you is to consult with appellate counsel to see whether there is anything to base such motions or appeals on. Be prepared to incur substantial attorneys' fees and costs of appeal for private counsel, even to consult for an opinion; appeals are generally handled on an hourly basis only. Otherwise try to find some 'prisoner rights' public interest law firm to look at it and see if they are willing to do anything. Talk to the attorney that represented him at trial, as the logical starting point.
