Have your friend ask us. That way you won't be practicing law without a license when we tell you the answer.
How on earth could Your Friend possibly have gotten convicted? Didn't he have a lawyer?? I suppose that's beside the point, but as to the present ticket, is he the only marijuana user left in California who doesn't yet have a medical marijuana card? The fact that he's on probation already suggests this won't be a fun experience for him, and he should consult a lawyer in person.
He faces new criminal charges, with a prior that adds to the severity and penalties, and faces probation violation charges. Thus, he faces potential jail time. If he is serious about hiring counsel to keep him from his own mistakes, feel free to have him contact me.
Your friend needs an attorney. It really depends on the County as to what may happen. He has a few difficult issues to deal with. First, he violated his probation, next he is not a first time offender and his prior conviction was not a simple possession charge. In these types of situations Jail time is always a possibility. Instead of you asking these questions your friend needs to be looking for an attorney. The best way you can help is to assist him in finding an attorney.
Good luck
