hello if a friend gave me canceled checks can i sue him for my loss

(1) not much of a friend,
(2) canceled how? They called their bank and canceled or insufficient funds?
To answer more directly, it depends. Of course you can sue for the value of the check plus any bank charges or other related costs you incurred beause of it, but if they knowingly gave you bad checks, you could also report the person to the District Attorney for check fraud.
