Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
A friend of mine was caught shoplifting at Walmart in California. She only stole $35 worth of supplies (two items) and she said her fine will be $500. Is that even possible? She is a minor (17 years old) and this was her first offense. I just want to know if that's even possible or if she's lying.
Thank you!

She faces potential criminal misdemeanor charges with up to a year in jail and $1000 fine. Do not let her pay the store, thinking she will get off with only that payment.
