Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

My friend was shot in the leg and arm while he was being robbed. He survived and two criminals were caught. Since the criminals have no money, can my friend go after their families for monetary compensation due to the crime?

There is a limited ability to recover from the parents of juveniles who commit a crime, but the family is not responsible for the acts of an adult.

If you had a family member who committed a crime... or even one who couldn't pay his or her debts.. do you think it would be fair for you to get stuck paying the bill?

Maybe, if the assailants are minors. If they are adults it is unlikely that their parents can be held liable. There are circumstances under which the parents might be liable even if the assailants are adults, but without more information I have no idea whether such circumstances are present here.

Not unless they are juveniles and the parents are found to be liable, and then the same 'broke' issues arise as to the parents.
