Re: First offense

You might well get some jail time for stealing a car, and afterward you would have problems getting a job.

You don't have to prove it wasn't you -- they have to prove it was you -- but non-guilty people who want to assert their innocence, unfortunately, have to hire a private lawyer to defend them. You can use the public defender if your income is low enough to qualify, but in my experience most people who use the public defender are pressured into pleading guilty. It is important enough to most people that they borrow the money from relatives if they have to in order to be represented.

I would be pleased to represent you, and I am sure you will hear from other LawGuru attorneys. Please feel free to call anytime if you have questions. If you do hire an attorney, make sure you do so well in advance of your court date.

A not guilty person should do the only and one thing if accused of a crime - hire a good lawyer. Whatever you do, please do not attempt to defend yourself. Always a very bad idea.

GTA results in prison time. How much depends upon the charges and what you're convicted of. Defense relies on admissible evidence and testimony. Your attorney will use whatever you've got. If you don't have an attorney, get one unless you like prison food and sleeping arrangements. Feel free to contact me if serious about doing so.
