Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Can a group of friends ages 17-21 go to a public convention without facing any legal repercussions? The main concern is being accused of sexual intercourse by a bystander of an underage (ex. 17) and a overage (ex. 21) member.

There's no law against adults socializing with minors. But the convention you want to attend may have rules of its own, and so may the venue. So if, say, minors aren't allowed unless they bring a parent or guardian, then some members of your group won't be admitted even though there is no law against spending time together.

Your question may have omitted some important facts. Why would attending the convention together make "a bystander" think you're having sex with a minor? Would he/she even know how old each of you is? And why do you think the legality of attending together has anything to do with whether you'll be accused?

If your relationship appears to be sexual, then that's something you should be concerned about. And if the relationship really *is* sexual, you could be in serious legal trouble.
