If you're an adult legal resident or citizen, and you're not a 'prohibited person' under state or federal law [meaning you can't have been convicted of a felony, or have had a restraining order issued against you, or been institutionalized or committed] then sure, you could follow the laws and buy a gun. Knives generally aren't regulated, except as to where and how you can carry them.
If you are a 'prohibited person', then even trying to buy a gun or ammo, or having any in your possession, is a felony with mandatory prison time.
