Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Hello,

First off thanks for any help I my get from this site.

I was caught shoplifting at Macys in Los Angeles County yesterday, 2 items totaling $262.

(I have no Idea why I done this,I'm 36 years old & It's very embarrassing and totally out of character for me)

I was taken to the back and escorted to the police station and cited with a 484 misdemeanor,

with a court date set for 12.13.12. fingerprinted and released.

I make 500 dollars a week and in no way can afford an attorney.

I'm prepared for any fines I may incur form this as I will find some way to make payments and make it right.

What I am concerned about is going to Jail. I know that it is punishable for up to $1000 in fines and 6 months in Jai,l but is this really going to happen for this small amount?

I've never been in a California Jail and after being booked there NEVER EVER WANT TO!

please help..

Thanks!

Request a public defender when you go to court. They may be able to work out something on your behalf.

First offenders typically don't get jail.

First, review your court date. It is unlikely to be a year from now.

You can request the public defender at your first court hearing, but you probably do not qualify making that salary, or if you are appointed one, you will be required to pay for it per a court schedule of income.

If you don't know how to represent yourself effectively against an experienced prosecutor intending to convict, then hire an attorney that does, who will try to get a first offender diversion program or other decent outcome through plea bargain. If serious about hiring counsel to help in this, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me. Ill be happy to help, using whatever defenses there may be.
