Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
if an investigator insists on ur password to ur phone MUST u give it or be charged with interfering in an investigation? What if ur not even formaly arrested, but their just trying to find "something"

I would tell they to get a warrant. They can't fish to find something. They need probable cause.
Like all other lawyers in this forum have suggested. They need a warrant.
Not only should you tell them that they need a warrant, but tell them that you will only talk to them if you have a lawyer present. If they are in your house show them the door. If you are elsewhere say good bye and walk away.
A little free advice: exercise the 5th Amendment right to SHUT UP and do NOT talk to police or anyone about the case except with and through an attorney. That means do nothing with them.
