Re: jail time

Inmates' families and loved ones often suffer real financial hardship. I'm afraid you are likely to experience such difficulties if your husband goes to jail or prison.

Whether your husband is fired will be up to his employer. Employers are generally free to fire any employee for any non-discriminatory reason, or even for no reason at all. Being convicted of a crime is a perfectly valid reason for being fired. Being jailed (even if only while awaiting trial) is another. In some situations (generally those involving minor crimes and short jail terms) the employee will not lose his job. Most are not so lucky.

Unfortunately for you, your husband's bills and other obligations will not be put on hold while he is behind bars. Such a law would penalize his creditors for his wrongdoing, and there is no reason they should be put at a disadvantage because of his crimes.

I wish you the best of luck in dealing with this very difficult situation.

Excuse me? Sorry, but anyone who told you the bills would be 'put on hold' was definitely pulling your leg. If he doesn't go to work, he doesn't get paid and he does get terminated. If the bills don't get paid, you get sued, evicted, etc. That is the natural consequence of his apparently poor choices and actions that caused his arrest. You'll have to find a way of supporting yourself and family without him while he is in jail. Many times the family ends up on welfare if relatives and friends don't support them.
