Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Juvenille theft
My son was caught shoplifting in a departmental store. have a court date to appear with him on July 15. The departmental store has send me a demand letter for $300 for libility of damanges. When he was caught, they took the pair of shoes he tried to shoplift from him (which cost about $70). There was no physical damage done to anything in the store or to the mechandise. I have requested for a itemized bill but what they send me was a breakdown of what they are/will be paying in payroll, security cameras, to control this kind of crime/incidents for the chain of stores nation wide for a year. Do I have to pay this?

You must make sure that if all fines and provisions are met with the department store that no criminal prosecution will not come to your son. Those misc. fines are normal and are typical.
Re: Juvenille theft
No, you don't have to pay it, but the alternative is criminal prosecution on your son. An attorney might be able to negotiate a better 'deal' with the store; and it might be worth the attorney fees you would pay in order to be sure criminal charges are dropped.
