Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

laptop theft

my former employer accused me of theft of a laptop.

they had the police question me at my present place of employement and attempted to make me say incriminating statements

I refused and stated that i never took anything from them and that i never signed any documentation for checking out equipment

Police stated that they did have the document and when i asked to see this document that i signed they left.

they cannot issue a search warrant for lack of propable cause

is this a strong case for grand theft

what are my options

Your options are to 'remain silent' from this point on, and to hire an attorney if they charge you. Feel free to contact me if that happens. and the case is in SoCal.

Re: laptop theft

Denying to the police that you stole the laptopp is the C- answer. The A answer is, "I respectfully decline to be questioned without an attorney present." Say these magic words, and they will walk away.

Re: laptop theft

How strong the case is will depend upon what evidence the police have. They may have more than you think, and you may be wrong about them not having sufficient grounds to get a search warrant. Because we don't know what evidence they already have or what else they will find, there is no way to say how strong their case may be.
