if the police bring up a case on you but have the wrong ss# what happens

Clerical errors like this have no legal effect. The case will proceed as it otherwise would. The error can be corrected at any time -- even after you are convicted if that is how it turns out.
If the error goes undetected it will be hard to tie the case to your existing records or for future background checks, etc., to reveal that you were charged, but those practical issues don't alter the legal validity of the charges or of any resulting conviction.
