Federal and state parks and forests, county and city wilderness areas, specially protected areas, etc,, all have specific and different rules. No one answer is applicable. You will need to check and confirm the rules of the area you propose. Unless you have a CCW, you can't carry one anywhere, since the state just made 'open carry' illegal, except for certain exceptions. If you have a CCW, all the specific rules and regs you were supposed to learn apply as well. I believe the California Rifle and Pistol Association publishes a pocket guide that covers these rules.
