Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
lying to police
Who is ultimately resposible for false information given to police in exchange for a lighter sentence? This is a real life situation:
The police encouraged an informant to offer new information for the benefit of their case, and the informant who is facing charges lies, and ultimately false charges are filed against a non guilty party. Over time the informant admits lying but the non guilty party is still facing charges---who is responsible to reconcile the charges?
