What is the difference between mayhem and aggravated mayhem?

Aggravated mayhem is committed under circumstances manifesting extreme indifference to

the physical or psychological well-being of another person and intentionally causing permanent disability. Mayhem is committed with malicious intent. The difference is one of degree.
